Throughout 2016 I’m going to continue to point you towards 70 rappers who are elevating the art of rap by being particularly raw, bold, honest, experimental or necessarily dissident. These men and women, from all over the world, have impacted many lives. Over the coming months maybe one or two of them will impact you.
I’m sick and tired of living through yet another year where the mainstream media give almost no time to innovative, diverse, heart-felt, political and spiritual voices in hip-hop. And I’m sick and tired enough of mainstream media rap clowns that I could throw up all over their jewel-encrusted high-tops and into their trendy drinks. I’m not the only one who feels this way. I hope this email shakes some people up.
The fact is that there are rappers who are writing, recording or performing brilliant material right now as you read this. So I’m increasingly compelled to share some of the genuine rap gems I’ve discovered over the last few years. If you’re just getting into rap or are eager to hear some refreshing hip-hop this blog is for you.
If you’ve steered clear of hip-hop music because of the nonsense rap you’ve come across in mainstream media, then perhaps 70 Elevators will offer new insight into the beauty, power, wit and vitality of the genre.
Oh, and if you’ve got suggestions for other rap elevators, email me: 70elevators (at) gmail.com or leave a comment below.
Let’s be clear: this is not a source of good vibes, squeaky-clean lyrics and mild manners. These songs have teeth and fire and soul.
